Derailment of DFT № 80694 between the stations Lyubenovo distributing-Simeonovgrad on 15.08.2025

On 14.08.2025, at the Varna freight station, DFT No. 80694 was composed for Belozem station. DFT No. 80694 consisting of 34 full tank wagons, type Zas, 136 axles, 2564 tons, 519 meters with a locomotive at the head No. 91521080032-1 and a pushing auxiliary locomotive No. 91520087023-5 departed from the Varna freight station at 22:32 p.m. The train was serviced by the railway enterprise "Bulmarket Rail Cargo" EOOD.

DFT No. 80694 was additionally assigned at the request of the railway enterprise "Bulmarket Rail Cargo" EOOD. The train's route was Varna freight station - Syndel - Karnobat - Nova Zagora - Simeonovgrad - Dimitrovgrad - Plovdiv - Belozem.

During the movement of DFT No. 80694 from Varna freight park station to the place of derailment of the train at 05:23 a.m. in the Lyubenovo distributing station - Simeonovgrad interstation, there was no problem with the movement of the train.

During the movement of DFT No. 80694, the locomotive driver first person of locomotive No. 91521080032-1 at 05:23 around km 11+500 in the Lyubenovo distributing station - Simeonovgrad interstation saw lighting and strong shaking of the catenary, followed by disconnection of the train and the train brake was activated.

After the train stopped, the locomotive driver first person saw that only the first wagon remained behind the locomotive, and about 150-200 meters away was the remaining derailed part of the train and a fire had broken out in the tanks, which was rapidly growing.

The locomotive driver first person called the national emergency number 112 and informed about the fire.

The locomotive crew of locomotive No. 91521080032-1 with the two fire extinguishers available from the locomotive extinguished the fire around it.

At around 05:26 a.m., the locomotive driver first person of DFT No. 80694 about the derailment and subsequent ignition of wagons notified the train dispatcher at the Plovdiv TOU.

At 05:27 a.m., teams from the Simeonovgrad FSaCP, Harmanli FSaCP, Dimitrovgrad FSaCP, Haskovo FSaCP, Svilengrad FSaCP and Lyubimets FSaCP were directed to the scene to extinguish the fire.

From 06:30 a.m. the movement of all vehicles in the Lyubenovo distributing station - Simeonovgrad section was suspended.

On 15.08.2025 at 11:45 a.m. the fire was localized and extinguished.

At 18:22 p.m. on 19.08.2025 the train dispatcher restored the movement of trains in the Simeonovgrad - Lyubenovo section, with the derailment site 200 meters long, trains moving at speeds up to 15 km/h.

Because of the derailment, severe material damage was caused to the railway track, to the catenary facilities, 13 tank wagons were completely destroyed by the fire and the fuel of 11 of them leaked into the soil. A 20 kV transmission line of the national power grid was interrupted because of the fire. No personnel of the two locomotives were injured. Train traffic on the 83rd railway line has been interrupted for five days.
